This post concerns selecting your divorce attorney.  And maybe the best way to analogize how most people go about doing this is to use  the terminology of romantic relationships.

Perhaps you are only separated, but already aware that you need a divorce attorney. How will you proceed?

Fast Mover? Don’t choose too quickly, thinking you just want to be finished with the mess as fast as you can. You could end up with an attorney who does not suit you, or cannot attain the results you want.

Speed Dater? Are you casting a wide net in your search, looking online and trying to process too much information from too many “possibles?” Again, stress or other superficial factors could cause you to make a less-than-ideal choice.

Open to a Fix-Up? Actually, taking an attorney referral from a trusted friend or family member, may be a lot less risky than an actual blind date. Presumably the referrer’s experience was a positive one; the attorney’s track record, then, may be instantly established. Of course, it’s possible that the two of you won’t “click”; but it may be worth at least one conversation and/or meeting. Another possibility: you are already personally acquainted with an attorney whom you may decide to hire. As in the dating arena, once you choose to change the nature of your (existing) friendship, you may find it has to be sacrificed in order to make the professional one work.

Online dating? Well, here you are reading this post. Obviously, there are many attorneys and websites online to peruse, if that is your preferred method. This form of search may either serve to confuse you with too much information, or help you narrow down what you want most in terms of selection.

We will examine the next steps in the attorney selection process in a subsequent posting.
